Literacy Day At The Library

The class of Pre-K a.m. and Pre-K p.m. along with three classes of Kindergarten children came to help celebrate Literacy Day at the library.  They learned how the library has fun and educational programs on the computers, got to play with some puppets, and looked at the books.

Statistics

Did you know that a report issued from the National Institute for Literacy estimates that nearly one in five Oklahomans lack the most basic reading, writing, and computational skills necessary for functioning in everyday life?

According to Profiles 2004 State Report, 22.2% of adults in Creek County do not have a high school diploma.  These figures jump to 28% for the community of Mounds.

The National Adult Literacy Survey (NALS) reports that an estimated 16% of adult population in Creek County functions at Literacy Level I, the lowest level of literacy skills.  The unemployment rate for Mounds is 5%, which is higher than the county rate of 4.8%.  The poverty rate for Mounds is 12%.  The Oklahoma Office of Accountability reported that drop out rate in Mounds was 8.1%, higher than the state rate of 3.5%.
